This is my children's favorite musical. We watch it periodically. My children know it more or less my heart, and never refuse an opportunity to see it.
It is full of wonderful humor, beautiful music and dancing, and lots of information about progress, moving forward, learning and adapting, making the best of a situation, taking on a challenge. Whenever any of these pop into your child's life, you can refer to this film as analogy, as an example, as a demonstration that with enthusiasm and ingenuity anything is achievable.
Take the opportunity to encourage your children to dance and sing.
The first musical film I introduced my children to was 'Peter and the Wolf', the animated version. It is beautifully done. The story is simple. The characters are lovable, including the wolf.
The story was created to teach children the sounds the music instruments make and how the different flavors can be associated with a personal characteristic. They learn about analogies in a sense that we often discuss in literature but we forget to note in many other art forms. The truth is that we use analogies in all of our activities (just think about the engineers who learned to dig tunnels by observing worms), but we choose to only 'value' certain categories when we should value all.
Use this film as an opportunity to love music and relate it to other things that are important in your lives.
