Friends kept on recommending the film and finally I decided that we should go and see it. Lego is a big name among my niece and nephew and my little man.
What a movie! It is more for parents than for kids. Follow the instructions, do it, but then make your own things; even the 3-in-1 sets can allow you, especially in conjunction with all else you already have, to make anything you envision and it is as valid as anything that is printed in the instruction manuals.
I hate following directions, I always have, although it is important to know how to do it. The problem I see with following directions is that the approach is over-used and overshadows the alternative approach of original thinking. For that reason I resist the themed Lego sets. So, to see a movie making fun of the consumer is what I found so endearing. The movie made fun of me. I loved it. Tonight I played with Duplo blocks with Sunlight boy, and soon enough Ballet girl, who is not as enticed by the construction concept, joined in.
Tonight we also played Qwirkle. A great strategic board game. The rules are very simple, the scoring too, yet it is fairly tough to think of a best strategy.
What is interesting is that after a few rounds you can devise a strategy by thinking of the pieces that are already placed on the table. The game is recommended for ages 6+. Ballet girl was able to play it at age 5. Sunlight boy is not ready for it. In general he is not a rule following fellow:)
