Hesston Steam Museum
Sunlight boy and I spent our Sunday there. It is a lovely place. The people, all volunteers, love their hobby of restoring, maintining annd running model trains and it shows. The way one is treated during the entire visit is fantastic. I highly recommend visiting on their nnon-promo days where less visitors come.
Last year we visited during their family promotion day and it was jam-packed. This year we visited on a non-promo day and it was light. We rode the trains comfortably as much as we wanted, and we had no lines to wait on. The food, ice-cream and milk-shake, came to us fast. We were delighted. The weather cooperated wonderfully too-the temperature was mainly in the upper 70s and slight breeze came around 4pm.
Another interesting thing to note is that the gift shop sells toy trains at about half the price you'd pay anywhere else-a Chuggington train was $9 as opposed to $20 at Toys R Us or I Love Toys and Trains in New Buffalo, Michigan.
Speaking of the I Love Toys and Trains store, we did go there because it is considered one of the attractions and because I chose to take US-12 to avoid I-94 coming back to Chicago as it was packed on a Sunday afternoon; US-12 passes right by the store. US-12 also passes on the east side of Outlet mall at Michigan City-a good learning. About the toy store-yes, there are tons of toys, some very old fashioned, some very new, some for train enthusiasts but the prices are stiff. More so than at a regular toy store. So, we will be avoiding this store in the future.
